Ever since I got onto twitter, I have been wishing everyone a #HappyDomesticLaborDay on the first Monday in September.
But this year, I want to highlight the climate implications of care labor. Caring for others and taking care of physical spaces by doing work of cleaning are all low-carbon jobs. According to Mindy Isser, who has written about care work and the Green New Deal, “The National Domestic Workers Alliance (my employer) describes it as ‘the work that makes all other work possible.’” However, because these jobs are generally done by women, people of color, and immigrants, they are low-paid and low prestige–or in the case of parenting, uncompensated and largely invisible. As labor sectors, they are also largely unorganized. This can change. The possibilities of labor transformation in these industries and for women’s work in general are endless. Previous New Deal legislation and other leaps forward for labor intentionally excluded women and people of color, but the Green New Deal is poised not to leave anyone behind. So here’s my first #DomesticLaborDay #GreenNewDeal collage. Enjoy!
