I have no training as a filmmaker, no real equipment, and not much time to make videos. And it shows! But social media isn’t about the quality of the work, it’s about the message and its ability to resonate with people. I LOVE Angie Powers’ video from earlier this week. You can tell that she’s a real filmmaker by the smoothness of the visuals. And of course it looks great, because she’s made shorts and even a feature which debuted at a real live film festival. But for the rest of us who will never reach those professional standards, we can use the powerful medium of video, as well. Here’s an example, and a how-to.
In February, the video went viral of a Black woman being detained by a security guard, and she began a spontaneous rap and dance.
Later, a remix song went viral. The creator was DJ Suede, who had done Cardi B’s Coronavirus remix.
But the refrain “lose yo job” spoke to me, as the demand of the moment both in Defunding Police, and as the referendum on the Tr*mp presidency. Adreana Langston felt the same way about Tr*mp, and had expressed it in a tweet.
Me on Nov 4th:
U about to lose your job
U about 2 lose your job (Get this vote)
U about 2 lose your job
Cause U R debasing our Republic— Adreana Langston (@AdreanaInLB) June 5, 2020
So I messaged her on Twitter and I hacked this video:

Like I said, I am NOT very tech savvy. But a few years ago, I ran across Cameo, Vimeo’s app. It was SO SIMPLE. It’s designed to just be able to string clips together. You can’t even edit the sound. It was super user-friendly. I began to make videos with it. However, earlier this month when I went to edit a video-in-progress, Cameo had been TAKEN OUT OF SERVICE, and THERE WAS NO APP ANYMORE! Several of my projects in progress were lost. So I had to research, download and learn a NEW PROGRAM. It’s hard for me to learn new programs, and I hate to have to change. But it worked out okay. I’ve started working in Videoshop. Also very simple and you can add music. I bought DJ Suede’s Lose Yo Job remix and was able to add it easily.
All of the footage is just bootlegged. Here’s how:
So, while you’re on lockdown, now is a great time to make fun political videos. Or heavy politics videos. We need the laughs and the tears and the inspiration. We need all the images we can get moving us toward a post-Tr*mp nation, defunding police, and the Green New Deal.
